When the Ice Stops Moving

A glacier can disappear before all of the ice is gone.

A glacier is not simply snow that survived the summer. It is ice with somewhere to go.

Given enough mass, glacier ice deforms and flows under its own weight. That movement is what separates a glacier from a permanent snowfield or a patch of stagnant ice. In Glacier National Park, scientists commonly use about 0.1 square kilometer — roughly 25 acres — as a practical size threshold for ice likely to move, although nature does not always obey a clean cutoff.

That makes the disappearance of a glacier stranger than simply watching white ice get smaller.

As a glacier thins and retreats, the question eventually becomes more than how much ice is left. The question is whether the remaining ice still behaves like a glacier at all.

Grinnell Glacier is one of the clearest places to watch that change. Photographs taken from the same viewpoints more than a century apart show a body of ice pulling back into the mountains while Upper Grinnell Lake grows in the space it leaves behind.

Between 1966 and 2015, Grinnell Glacier lost 113 acres. Across Glacier National Park, every glacier that has been measured over the long term has receded.

The change does not arrive as one dramatic final day. Snow can still fill a basin. Old ice can remain in shadow. Meltwater can still run cold through a valley carved by glaciers long before any of us arrived.

But eventually a threshold is crossed.

What looked permanent becomes smaller. What moved becomes slower. And a piece of mountain ice that once flowed downhill under its own weight may no longer be a glacier in the way scientists use the word.

The landscape remains. The cirques, lakes, moraines and polished stone remain. They are the handwriting left behind by moving ice.

Sometimes the last difference between a glacier and a snowfield is not what you can see from a distance.

It is whether the ice is still moving.

The mountain can keep the ice for a while longer. What makes it a glacier is the movement.
